What it is

A living relative of crocodiles and alligators. The ones in the Orobates study were spectacled caimans.

Why it matters

It was the other end of the scale from the salamander. A caiman can lift its belly well off the ground and walk on legs held nearly under its body, a gait called the high walk. Filmed with x-rays, the caimans in the study walked only that way. The walks that passed for Orobates landed close to the caiman's.

A test run

To check their method, the team gave the computer only a caiman skeleton and caiman footprints, and asked which walks were possible. Its answer took in the walks real caimans used.
