What it is

A living crocodile. Its front feet print five toes and its back feet four.

The first suspect

When Henry Duncan sent William Buckland casts of the Scottish fossil footprints, Buckland first looked to crocodiles and tortoises as the living animals most like the trackmaker. Buckland walked a crocodile over soft pie crust first. Its prints, he wrote, showed that the fossil tracks were not a crocodile's.
