Who he was

A South Australian geologist who wrote about the glacial rocks of Hallett Cove, in Adelaide, in papers published in 1895 and 1924.

Far older

When the scratched rocks at Hallett Cove were first studied, the ice that made them was thought to be recent. Howchin argued it was far older, probably Permian. South Australia's geological survey cites him for that identification. Today the ice sheet is placed more than 280 million years ago, when Australia was still joined to Antarctica, near the South Pole.
