What they were

Drifting colonies in the ancient sea, some shaped like pencil marks. They lived in the crowded oceans of about 444 million years ago.

Why they matter

Graptolites spread widely and changed quickly, so their fossils work like time stamps. In the first mass extinction they lost whole branches. Read across those time stamps, the dying was selective: many warm-water forms disappeared while cold-tolerant groups spread.
