What they were

Corals, but not the corals you know. They grew as honeycombs of narrow tubes, one animal to a cell. Inside every tube, floors stacked up like shelves.

What they built

A frame. Between them, these corals and the reef-building sponges made a wall of skeleton, hard enough for the open sea to break on.
