Who he was

A geologist. In 1859, on a beach in Canada, he found the first Prototaxites. He thought he was looking at a rotten conifer log, so he gave it a name that means "first yew."

What happened next

Thirteen years later, a botanist in London looked inside one and saw no wood at all. The name stayed. The answer has changed ten more times since.
